I am a certified Educational Therapist who completed my degree of Educational Therapy from UC Berkeley. I completed my Bachelor of Arts in Elementary Education and Human Development from Boston College. I am a California credentialed teacher with eight years of classroom teaching experience and am currently doing full time private practice.

I strive to keep students engaged and interested throughout each session.

Philosophy

My fundamental philosophy on Education stems from Howard Gardner’s Multiple Intelligence Theory which states that all children can learn. It is the educators’ role to teach to each child’s strengths while working to improve his/her learning differences. I also believe that many students are right brain learners, but most school settings teach to the left brain learner which is why so many students struggle in school. Students are expected to sit and listen, read aloud and silently, follow directions, and do paper and pencil tasks throughout the day. For many children, this is a great challenge and therefore, need extra support outside of the school setting. My gentle yet engaging approach allows students to find success in their learning and provides support for their academic needs.

Training

I am trained in the following programs:

  • Slingerland Multi-Sensory Reading Program
A reading program designed for students with language based learning differences, such as dyslexia
  • Lindamood Bell Reading Program
    • Seeing Stars — a reading program that focuses on symbol imagery for phonemic awareness, sight words and spelling
    • Visualizing and Verbalizing — a reading program that focuses on language comprehension and thinking
    • LiPs Program — a reading program for phoneme sequencing for reading, spelling, and speech
  • Wilson Fundations Reading Program
Designed for students who struggle with phonemic awareness and may have difficulty with reading and spelling
  • Read Naturally Program

  • Making Math Real Program

It is a great relief for a parent to have someone who can skillfully explain to one’s children on a one-on-one basis those things which can seem impossible to understand in the confines of a busy classroom with lots of noise and distractions. We would highly recommend Shannon as a tutor.
